A reason, a season or a lifetime.

People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. When you figure out which one it is, you will know what to do for each person.

When someone is in your life for a Reason ...It is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally, or spiritually. They may seem like a Godsend and they are! They are there for the reason you need them to be.

Then, without any wrongdoing on your part, or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end.

Sometimes they walk away.

Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand.

Sometimes they die.

What we must realise is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done.

Your need has been answered, and now it is time to move on.

When people come into your life for a Season ... it is because your turn has come to share, grow, or learn.

They bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh.

They may teach you something you have never done.

They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy.

Believe it! It is real! But, only for a season.

Lifetime relationships teach you lifetime lessons; things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person, and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life.

It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant.

Thank you for being a part of my life, whether you were a reason, a season or a lifetime.

ORRCA's Annual Whale Census Day - 26 June

We have been truly blessed with such wonderful weather this weekend. Instead of heading out to Jervis Bay to help with the Census, I headed up to Port Kembla to look for a seal that had hauled out last night. After an unsuccessful search I headed off to Hill 60 to make the most of my time and see if I was lucky enough to view some whales.

What an amazingly beautiful spot! The weather was perfect - usually on Census Day I absolutely freeze! Definitely must have had something to do with investing in all the cold weather gear that I absolutely did not need!

We had 33 Humpback whales and a seal! The first two photos are taken from our vantage point. Sorry for the quality of the whale pics, but considering they were beyond the large island in the rear of the photo, it was the best I could do!

While our friends in the Northern Hemisphere are entering Spring and Summer, downunder we are quickly approaching winter. Can you believe that we are already 1/3 of the way through the year! Feels like Christmas was only a few weeks ago - it is also hard to believe that I have been home from my US holiday for 12 weeks!

Today was a glorious day and I spent most of it out in the garden taking in the Autumn sun and just enjoying the wonderful winter flowers that are blooming and the magnificent King Parrots that were visiting.

Just a Common Soldier

He was getting old and paunchy
And his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the RSL,
Telling stories of the past.

Of a war that he once fought in
And the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies;
They were heroes, every one.

And 'tho sometimes to his neighbors
His tales became a joke,
All his mates listened quietly
For they knew where of he spoke.

But we'll hear his tales no longer,
For ol' Bob has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer
For a Soldier died today.

He won't be mourned by many,
Just his children and his wife.
For he lived an ordinary,
Very quiet sort of life.

He held a job and raised a family,
Going quietly on his way;
And the world won't note his passing,

When politicians leave this earth,
Their bodies lie in state,
While thousands note their passing,
And proclaim that they were great.

Papers tell of their life stories
From the time that they were young
But the passing of a Soldier

To the welfare of our land,
Some jerk who breaks his promise
And cons his fellow man?

Or the ordinary fellow
Who in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his country
And offers up his life?

The politician's stipend
And the style in which he lives,
Are often disproportionate,
To the service that he gives.

While the ordinary Soldier,
Who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal
And perhaps a pension, small.

It's so easy to forget them,
For it is so many times
That our Bobs and Jims and Johnnys,
Went to battle, but we know,

It is not the politicians
With their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom
That our country now enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger,
With your enemies at hand,
Would you really want some cop-out,
With his ever waffling stand?

Or would you want a Soldier--
His home, his country, his kin,
Just a common Soldier,
Who would fight until the end.

He was just a common Soldier,
And his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us
We may need his like again.

For when countries are in conflict,
We find the Soldier's part
Is to clean up all the troubles
That the politicians start.

If we cannot do him honor
While he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage
At the ending of his days..

Perhaps just a simple headline
In the paper that might say:
"OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING,
A SOLDIER DIED TODAY."

A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank cheque made payable to ' Australia ', ' New Zealand ', or any other God fearing country for an amount "up to and including my life".

That is Honour, and there are way too many people in this WORLD who no longer understand it.

I Saw the Soldiers Marching

I saw the soldiers marching, one drear November day,
Those heroes bold, from wars of old, in countries far away.
I heard the drums like thunder, the sound of marching feet,
As men of ancient valor marched down our little street.

I heard the skirl of bagpipes, the blare of brasses bold,
As heroes from another time relived the days of old.
The old, the frail, the lame, the slow, they marched with solemn pace,
To honor comrades fallen at another time and place.

I felt the tightness in my throat, the tears that burned my eyes,
As I watched the quiet dignity of old men marching by.
The fine young men, and women too, in battles long ago,
Who gave their youth and some, their lives,to fight our country’s foe.

On this day will be remembered by comrades who remain,
And by the heavens, weeping, with softly falling rain.
The medals softly jingling on every passing chest,
In memory of companions who’ve long been laid to rest.

There are some unfit, and some who sit, in wheelchairs, row on row,
While they recall what price was paid to turn our country’s foe.
And some will stand with tear-dimmed eyes, and some with faces grim,
While all repeat the solemn vow,
"WE WILL REMEMBER THEM."

Well, it is hard to believe that we are now halfway through April and nearly 1/3 of the way into 2011! Where is time going?

The following four photos were taken in the grounds of the historic Berry Courthouse which was completed in 1891. To view larger images, just click on the photo.

Luckily for me there was no spider to be seen, and I just couldn't resist trying to get a photo of its web.

Having spent nearly 2 months of our summer away, I thought I would come home to the typical summer results with the lawn and garden, however we have had and are still having so much rain that everything is so green and lush.

Baillie has discovered that his rightful place is sitting on top of one of the recliners!

The following pics were taken whilst we were sitting out on the patio having breakfast at friends in Old Erowal Bay.

This pair of King Parrots came for a visit, although the female decided she wasn't game enough to come down for some feed.

What started out as a report of a stranded whale with a calf still in the shallows, turned out to be a single Southern Right Whale! He made his way from beach to beach until dusk when we couldn't watch him anymore! It is so amazing how close these whales come in, and we were lucky enough to hear this one *trumpet*.... enjoy the slideshow!

ORRCA Whale Census Day

Wendy, Vicki and keen members of the public counting Humpback whales from the Ruined Lighthouse Booderee National Park, Jervis Bay.

Although it was a very, very cold day, we had over 400 guests visit the park.

We were also lucky to have the privilege of spending the day with Julie, Marley and other members from Booderee National Park. Not only do they serve tea, coffee, hot milo and Barry's wonderful damper, but they provide an informal cultural talk on indigenous people and their connection with whales.

Trust me when I say that you have never experienced damper until you try Barry's!

Three Humpback whales.

Each animal's dorsal is unique.

This particular whale will be easily identified by, not only his unique dorsal fin, but also the large white marking on his flank.

If you look closely, this whale has what appears to be rake marks (from an Orca perhaps) or maybe marks from a propeller injury? Can you spot the second whale?

Thank goodness for a 400mm lens! The top right hand corner of this pic is where we would initially see the first blow or blows!

If you are an avid bird watcher, you can see numerous species, and we are always lucky to see a number of sea eagles!

Well, after catching up with Jen I have managed to get back into the studio and create something! Helps that I am not working so have plenty of time on my hands - in between trying to find a job that is!

I started playing with copper 10 years ago and we had a Collaborative book swap and I did the covers in copper.... then went on to do a couple of other items... then... nothing....

So here are a few pictures.... love copper and heat, brass, swarovski crystal and freshwater pearls!

Baillie has discovered the top of the lounge! A lot of others who have CKCS have said that their dogs sit on top of the lounges all the time. Looks like Baillie figured it out last week. I came out into the lounge to see him here... and I am sure he is laughing at me.... lol

Foods that are Hazardous to your pet

The following 'human foods" can be toxic and should be avoided at all costs.

Alcoholic beverages

It is often sweet - attracting dogs and cats, but can cause serious and fatal intoxication. Don't ever offer this to your pets.

Here are some of the signs and side effects:

- Incoordination/ataxia

- Excitement

- Depression

- Excessive urination

- Breathing rate is slowed

- Cardiac arrest and death

Avocado

Avocado leaves, fruit, seeds and bark contain a toxic principle known as Persin. The Guatemalan variety is most toxic - but all have toxic potential. They cause vomiting/diarrhea - primarily gastrointestinal distress.

Chocolate (all forms)

Chocolate contains theobromine, a compound that is a cardiac stimulant and a diuretic.

Signs:

Initial excitation.

Increased drinking and urinating.

Vomiting and Diarrhea.

Theobromine causes an increased heart rate and arrhythmia -.

Seizures can then be seen.

Death is then possible.

ACTION PLAN: Induce vomiting, give activated charcoal, and go to the Vet if depression and seizures begin. Baker's chocolate and high cocoa content chocolate is the most toxic; the toxic dose is

2 baking squares for a 10lb dog. Regular chocolate bars have little real chocolate and are seldom toxic.

Coffee (all forms)

Coffee contains dangerous components called xanthines, which cause nervous system or urinary system damage and heart muscle stimulation

Fatty foods

The primary concern here is severe gastrointestinal upset- and in some cases Pancreatitis.

This can be fatal in some pets- and it is ALMOST always triggered by a High Fat Meal, such as gravy or bacon.

Macadamia nuts

Macadamia nuts contain an unknown toxin, which can affect the digestive and nervous systems and muscles of dogs. This has lead to paralysis. A small number of nuts and even the butter can cause this.

Moldy or spoiled foods

Many molds contain a type of toxin called an Aflatoxin. This is thought to be a common cause of "compost toxicity". Signs include GI (Vomiting/Diarrhea), muscle tremors, in-coordination, elevated temperature, excessive salivation, and liver damage. Avoid feeding ANYTHING moldy to your dog or cat.

Onions, onion powder

Onions contain the toxic ingredient thiosulphate.

Pets affected by onion toxicity will develop anemia. 1 Onion can cause this. Fortunately ALL dogs recover once they are stopped from ingesting onions.

Raisins and grapes

As few as 6 grapes and raisins have caused acute kidney failure in some dogs.

The toxic ingredient is not yet known.

There is no treatement.

AVOID feeding ANY grapes or raisins to your dogs.

Yeast dough

The yeast dough/uncooked bread dough will rise in your pet's stomach causing severe gastrointestinal distress (vomiting/diarrhea), bloating, and signs of alcohol toxicity.

Xylitol

Xylitol is a artificial sweeter found in "SUGAR FREE" Products, such as gum, candy etc.

Signs relate to a sudden drop in glucose (blood sugar), in-coordination, collapse and seizures.

Avoid feeding any gum/candy to your pets.

Apples, Apricots, Cherries, Peaches and Plums.

Ingestion of large amounts of stems, seeds and leaves of these fruits can be toxic.

They contain a cyanide type compound and signs of toxicity include apprehension, dilated pupils, difficulty breathing, hyperventilation and shock.

Note - it's the seeds and stems that contain the toxic component, not the fruit itself.

Potato peelings and green looking potatoes

Potatoes and other Solanum species, including the tomato, are members of the nightshade family of plants.

These plants contain solanine and other toxic alkaloids which, if eaten in large enough amounts, can produce drooling, severe gastrointestinal upset, including vomiting and diarrhea, loss of appetite, drowsiness, central nervous system depression, confusion, behavioral changes, weakness, dilated pupils and slowed heart rate.

Nutmeg

High levels of nutmeg can be toxic, even fatal.

The toxic component is unknown.

Signs of toxicity include tremors, seizures, nervous system abnormalities or death.

Tomato leaves & stems (green parts)

The green parts of the tomato plant are considered toxic because they contain solanine, which has the potential to produce significant gastrointestinal and central nervous system effects.

Today we went out on Tekin III - The Spirit of Jervis Bay. Not only did we encounter a couple of fur seals, but spent quite some time watching humpbacks. Whale Census Day

Well, was up at 5am .... and out at Cape St George Lighthouse in Booderee National Park at 6.45am..... It was such a glorious morning..... and it wasn't long before I spotted our first whale for the day, a Minke.... We had 46 whales, sea eagles, dolphins and a couple of seals! Glorious sunrise, and the historic light house remains were great, as well as a few heart shaped rocks I found when going for a walk!

For those of you visiting the South Coast, head down to Huskisson and go out on a whale watching trip with Dolphin Watch Cruises, you may not only enounter the local resident dolphins but other species as well! In October and November we do encounter many mother and calf humpbacks too!

In her crusade to help the animals, Bernie has been assisted by her friend Joe Frazz.
Joe is a canine photographer, dedicated to helping dogs in shelters. He donates his time and energy by helping every chance he can. Bernie and Joe are going to be working on collaborative projects in the upcoming months.

Introducing Jessie

Jessie a 15 year old Lab X - was rescued when she was 16 weeks old... went to live with my ex with her older adopted *sister* Corky. Sadly, Corky is no longer with us.

Jessie has come to live with me again, and although Baillie and Harley don't mind her, they are not too sure what too make of it all!

Jess has been an outside dog for the past 3 years, having to sleep outside .... as she can fit through the doggy door, she now has a bed made up in the living room! I am going to have to make some changes so that the old girl can live out the rest of her life in a home filled with love.

I have also included some photos taken many, many years ago when I visited Wolf Mountain Sanctuary in Lucerne Vallery, California..... The first wolf is Apache Moon and the 2nd and 3rd is Dakota.... they are such huge creatures... but it was an experience I will cherish... if you get the chance.... go and meet the wolves.....

Local CFA firefighter David Tree shares his water with an injured Australian Koala at Mirboo North after wildfires swept through the region on Monday, Feb. 9, 2009. Suspicions that the worst wildfires ever to strike Australia were deliberately set led police to declare crime scenes Monday in towns incinerated by blazes, while investigators moving into the charred landscape discovered more bodies. Victorian Fires

I have had many friends email to find out if everything is ok where I live. The fires are located in Victoria, which is roughly 600miles away..... although there have been a number of fires locally, they have been nothing compared to those in Victoria.

It is so hard to believe just how devastating these fires have been..... they are estimating well over 200 lives have been lost not to mention the vast numbers of animals, both native and domestic.

I've listed a news site for those of you who are interested in keeping up with what has happened.

There are a large number of appeals being set up and the response has been amazing.

My sympathies go to all those families who have lost someone and heatfelt thanks to all the firefighters and volunteers who are helping fight the fires and help with survivors.

I really do hope that they find the arsonists.....I just cannot fathom how anyone could start fires!

A very hot summer

As the weather has been so unusually hot, I decided to get the boys a haircut! You should have seen them when they got home..... it must have been such a relief! Next day we went swimming....... Harley decided that he had had spent enough time swimming and had a rest on Baillie!

Heatwave

Well, we are all experiencing a heatwave at the moment. In Victoria this little Koala nicknamed Star went into the Young's property in search of water. From the reports I have read, Star was hesitant at first and then drank some water from Ms Young's hand, then lapped up some water before hopping into the bucket! Star is now being cared for and will be released in the future. For those of you who don't know, Koalas get their fluids from the gum leaves that they eat, so for them to be actively seeking out water shows just how hot it is as the leaves would be dried out!

This little guy nicknamed "Lance" actually approached these bike riders who kindly gave him some refreshments! Koala's are usually very shy little creatures!

As you can see from these pics, the boys weren't too impressed with having their photos taken this year! Took a lot of time and many treats ... and even still, the pics weren't what I had hoped for!

Harley always look grumpy, but he isn't! He is the sweetest little guy and as for Baillie, well he is just too pretty for a boy! lol

Last Sunday I had a little helper, Kali (5 years) help set up my Christmas tree! What a delight to have a little one help with the Christmas decorations.

Isn't this little angel divine! A wonderful gift from Donna..... although my angel should be out in the garden, I have decided to keep her inside - at least for Christmas!

For this Crusade Michelle has challenged us to Clean Your Plate. She has asked up to wrap up loose ends to make way for something new. Michelle also suggests that cleaning your plate can be interpreted in our own way, whether it be simply preparing our home for a new season, i.e. downunder Spring has just started, clearing out our studio, etc.

I've been in my new home for just over 12 months, and still have many, many boxes yet to unpack. Having gone back to full time work hasn't helped and putting in extra hours hasn't been condusive either!

Last weekend I started work on cleaning the kitchen and dining room.... I admit to being a hoarder and managed to throw out quite a lot of items that I was holding on to! I'm one of those people who if they happen to have a horizontal surface it is quickly filled! As my studio is still in a complete case of kaos, I tend to do a lot of my work at the kitchen bench....

I actually took a photo to show a few friends.... and the comment was... whose kitchen is that!

Also put up a new piece of art on my bedroom wall... which has been blank for way too long.

Today I also decided to grab the camera and take advantage of the great weather (hard to believe that 10 days ago we were wearing multiple layers and today a tshirt!).

I've put up some of the photos of the flowers and fruit trees in my yard.... another thing I promised to do last year and didn't....

GPP Steet Team Crusade - Pay It Forward #2

If you haven't been to Michelle Ward's website, it is a must! So far (as at 21st August) 612 pink socks have been received! Oh how I would love to be at the hospital when the socks arrive!

Received another call this morning that there was a stranded dolphin at Gerroa, approximately 20mins from my place .... When I arrived found that is was in fact a seal.... a wonderful male Sub Antarctic Fur Seal.

So, another glorious day spent out in the sun on a beautiful beach with a majestic creature.

I was also lucky to encounter some more generous people who waited for me to arrive, took me to the seal, offered to stay with me and others who offered to go and get food and drink!

This guy had hauled out onto the sand and was resting. No injuries were observed and he seemed to be content sunning himself. He was just above the tide mark and everytime the waves would move up, he would move relocate up the beach a little further.

Here he is yawning.... and just look at his amazing whiskers!

Once again, this is a popular stretch of beach with many walkers and although it is not a dog friendly beach, there are still plenty of dogs off the leash!

On the way back to the car I came across another heart shaped shell - a symbol of the generosity of the people I come across!

In this month's crusade, Michelle asked everyone to think creatively. Michelle asked us to think about what we are grateful for - a kindness that has been directed our way, and to think about how we can honour that kindness by paying it forward to someone else.

Michelle recently lost her younger Sister Shannon. Michelle asked for readers of her blog to send her 65 pink socks which she would send to the nurses who cared for Shannon.

You may be asking why "65"- A little boy who could not pronounce his sibling's condition, Cystic Fibrosis, called it "65 Roses". Go and check out Michelle's website - at last count (13th August) there were 434 pair of socks from around the globe!

As some of you know, I'm involved in a marine mammal research and rescue group called ORRCA.

On Saturday I received a call asking me to investigate a fur seal that had hauled out on a beach on the South Coast. So, off down south for a lovely hours drive. Took me a while to find the little one who had apparently been chased up the beach by some dogs! He/she is presently in care.

Sometimes you may search for hours and never find the animal you have been sent to look for, so it is important to remember that if you ever find any wildlife to give as many details as to it's location as possible to the rescue organisation.

So you may be thinking what has this got to do with the Street Team, right? Well, I am constantly amazed by the wonderful people that I meet doing this volunteer work.

I couldn't tell you just how many people came back down to the beach during the day to check on the little seal and also to check whether I wanted anything such as food or drink.

I like to think that I am doing my bit for the animals and at the same time teaching people a little about our marine mammals too.

I've also sent off a little gift to a dear friend just because.... but cannot say too much as I don't want to spill the beans in case she reads this blog! lol

The weather on Saturday was fabulous and when there were no people or dogs around I managed to take some pics. (Some I had taken earlier prior to finding the seal pup .... when I was looking for him on the rocks he had been reported to be on.... well, a rock..... just my luck there were hundreds!)

I have been busy making earrings over the last couple of weeks, have some on consignment and need to concentrate on using up my supplies!

I purchased some watch hands from Julie H ages ago, and together with the large stash of watch pieces I decided to actually make something as that was the intention when I bought them! These are listed in my Etsy shop.

I just love these Dalmation Jasper gemstones.... need to play with them a bit more!

These are some wonderful new findings.... just love the colour of the freshwater pearls and also these hammered disks are fabulous!

Baillie really has a *thing* for TV when there are dogs or other animals present. He does sit there for a while but once they start making a noise I am sure he really wants to join them!

Usually, when I leave for work and the sky is blue, once I get to Cambewarra Mountain and before I start the desent into the valley, this is the view of what the fog is like. We sometimes have it for quite a few hours before it burns off!

Remembering Corky

Yesterday, my sweet Corky crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Corky was 14 weeks old when I rescued her and has just turned 15. As I was moving and having to rent, Corky and Jessie went to live with my ex.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.

There is plenty of food and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they miss someone very special to them; who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright eyes are intent; the eager body quivers.

Suddenly she begins to break away from the group, flying over the green grass, her legs carrying her faster and faster. YOU have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.

The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Meeting up with friends

Last Sunday we had a wonderful lunch with Suze & Lenny Weinberg, Phyllis, Jo, Richard and Hugo at The Harbour Front Restaurant in Wollongong that lasted for over 5 hours..... lots of catching up, laughter and fun was definitely had!

Humpback Whale Migration

As some of you know, one of my other passions is Marine Mammals. The Humpback whale Megaptera novaeangliae will soon commence their northern migration and ORRCA holds an annual Whale Census Day on Sunday 29th June.

Groups of people gather at certain spots along the coast and spend the day counting the number of passing whales.

We record all types of observations e.g. species, behaviour and of course number. The statistics are correlated and available to anyone with an interest in cetacean research; the National Parks and Wildlife Service add our figures to their data on marine mammals and it all goes towards managing our ocean in a manner conducive to the well-being of marine life.

Apart from providing useful data it’s a terrific way to spend a winter Sunday.

No special equipment is required, just a comfy seat, food, drink, warm clothing and, of course, a pen. A pair of binoculars is a great help as is a camera.

There are particular places that are used every year but if you would like to participate at your own favourite spot that is fine too.

The count goes from 7:00am until 4:30pm but not everyone can manage a whole day, however even a couple of hours will help. If you are interested in participating, please email me and I will arrange to have the recording forms sent out to you!

These photos have been supplied by my dear friend Wayne. Wayne and I started up a land based whale watching many years ago observing the Humpbacks on their migration north. In the photo above, you can not only see this humpback's throat pleats, but if you look carefully you can even see his/her eye in the bottom right.

This pic shows the humpback feeding. He/she is on their side, they scoop up a mouthful of water and then the krill/etc is forced out through the baleen which acts as a sieve.

A pic of the flukes. Photos such as these are used for identification purposes. This one appears to have a "bite" taken out of the left hand side! More than likely an encounter with an orca.

Weekend accomplishments thus far

Well, have actually made a few pieces of jewellery today.... Having a four day break is wonderful.... hopefully I can do a few more things over the next couple of days too!

I recently picked up some silver plated vintage cutlery and managed to put together the following. A fair bit of wire wrapping, drilling, polishing etc.... gotta love my dremel! lol

The fork was a bit of a trial.... I managed to break off one of the prongs... so made it into a loop! Then when I was trying to polish it, went a bit crazy with the dremel, therefore I had to create a pattern on it to cover up the mistakes!

Backyard visitors

Whilst taking a break from trying to tidy up my studio on Sunday, I managed to snap a couple of the regular visitors to my backyard.

This Kookaburra stayed for quite a while while the female King Parrot feasted on the feed and then flew off to join her mate.

Well, what can I say. If Michael is teaching a class nearby I cannot recommend his workshops highly enough! He is one of the most generous, warm and kind souls you will encounter and his teaching skills are awesome.

Michael is such a talented artist who is more than happy to share his techniques. He is one of those teachers who spends time with all his students and we were all a little worried about the Good, the Bad and the Ugly critic at the end of the workshop. However, this was a fabulous end to the weekend, Michael went through each person's piece and discussed various aspects. It enabled us all to learn from each other. One of the things I loved about Michael's workshop was how different each of us interpreted what he had taught us. Although we had been taught the same techniques, we all used them in a different fashion. How refreshing to walk out of a workshop where everyone's work is unique!

Here are some pics of my Assemblook.... this would be the first workshop in which I have completed something that I was actually happy with!

From all accounts everyone had a great time and got on extremely well. I was finally able to meet in person a number of people that I have only ever met "online". By the end of the weekend many new friendships were forged.

There is a possibility that Michael will be doing another workshop here in Sydney in June fingers crossed.

Not only were we lucky enough to have Michael teach, but Michael's girlfriend Judy came to visit on Saturday night and brought with her some of her outstanding artwork as well.

Judy is featured in the latest edition of Cloth Paper Scissors, so if you haven't a copy as yet I'd suggest you run out and get one!

Judy also brought along some of the items that she sells on her Etsy site.... and of course, most of us just had to buy lots of bits and pieces. I utilised a lot of the rusty bits and pieces I had bought off Judy in my Assemblook. Check out Judy's blog here and her Etsy store Red Velvet Elements.

The following article was posted on a group I am on. "101 dogs seized from "kennel hell"." In this instance the boarding/grooming kennel have let the dogs live in the most disgusting of conditions! They were raided by RSPCA and the police and the dogs have been removed.

For those of you in the Northern Hemisphere, it is Christmas Day whilst downunder it is Boxing Day.

Origins
Boxing Day is a traditional celebration, dating back to the Middle Ages, and consisted of the practice of giving out gifts to employees, the poor, or to people in a lower social class. The name has numerous folk etymologies[3]; the Oxford English Dictionary attributes it to the Christmas box; the verb box meaning: "To give a Christmas-box (colloq.); whence boxing-day." Outside the Commonwealth, the day is still celebrated but just with a different name.

Folk etymologies

The more common stories include:

It was the day when people would give a present or Christmas box to those who had worked for them throughout the year.

In feudal times, Christmas was a reason for a gathering of extended families. All the serfs would gather their families in the manor of their lord, which made it easier for the lord of the estate to hand out annual stipends to the serfs. After all the Christmas parties on 26 December, the lord of the estate would give practical goods such as cloth, grains, and tools to the serfs who lived on his land. Each family would get a box full of such goods the day after Christmas. Under this explanation, there was nothing voluntary about this transaction; the lord of the manor was obliged to supply these goods. Because of the boxes being given out, the day was called Boxing Day.

In England many years ago, it was common practice for the servants to carry boxes to their employers when they arrived for their day's work on the day after Christmas. Their employers would then put coins in the boxes as special end-of-year gifts. This can be compared with the modern day concept of Christmas bonuses. The servants carried boxes for the coins, hence the name Boxing Day.

In churches, it was traditional to open the church's donation box on Christmas Day, and the money in the donation box was to be distributed to the poorer or lower class citizens on the next day. In this case, the "box" in "Boxing Day" comes from that lockbox in which the donations were left.

Boxing Day was the day when the wren, the king of birds,[4] was captured and put in a box and introduced to each household in the village when he would be asked for a successful year and a good harvest. See Frazer's Golden Bough.

Evidence can also be found in Wassail songs such as:

Because the staff had to work on such an important day as Christmas by serving the master of the house and their family, they were given the following day off. As servants were kept away from their own families to work on a traditional religious holiday and were not able to celebrate Christmas Dinner, the customary benefit was to "box" up the leftover food from Christmas Day and send it away with the servants and their families. (Similarly, as the servants had the 26th off, the owners of the manor may have had to serve themselves pre-prepared, boxed food for that one day.) Hence the "boxing" of food became "Boxing Day".

It is summer here at the moment, so our Christmas lunch and dinner is suited for the warmer temperatures! Lots of seafood - oysters, fish, prawns and wonderful salads! Topped off with some awesome desserts! Here are a couple of shots of just some of what was on offer!

Spare a thought for our Troops overseas

Received this in an email. The following is from the daughter of an Australian Soldier.

"Last week I was in Melbourne attending a conference.

While I was in the airport, returning home, I heard several people behind me beginning to clap and cheer.

I immediately turned around and witnessed one of the greatest acts of patriotism I have ever seen.

Moving through the terminal was a group of soldiers in their uniforms, as they began heading to their gate everyone (well almost everyone) was abruptly to their feet with their hands waving and cheering.

When I saw the soldiers, probably 30-40 of them, being applauded and cheered for, it hit me. I'm not alone. I'm not the only red blooded Australian who still loves this country and supports our troops and their families. Of course I immediately stopped and began clapping for these young unsung heroes who are putting their lives on the line everyday for us so we can go to school, work, and enjoy our home without fear or reprisal.

Just when I thought I could not be more proud of my country or of our service men and women a young girl, not more than 6 or 7 years old, ran up to one of the male soldiers.

He knelt down and said 'hi,' the little girl then asked him if he would give something to her daddy for her.

The young soldier didn't look any older than maybe 22 himself, said he would try and what did she want to give to her daddy.

Suddenly the little girl grabbed the neck of this soldier, gave him the biggest hug she could muster and then kissed him on the cheek.

The mother of the little girl, who said her daughters name was Courtney, told the young soldier that her husband was a Corporal and had been in Afghanistan for 5 months now.

As the mum was explaining how much her daughter, Courtney, missed her father, the young soldier began to tear up.

When this temporarily single mum was done explaining her situation, all of the soldiers huddled together for a brief second.

Then one of the other servicemen pulled out a military looking walkie-talkie.

They started playing with the device and talking back and forth on it.

After about 10-15 seconds of this, the young soldier walked back over to Courtney, bent down and said this to her, 'I spoke to your daddy and he told me to give this to you.'

He then hugged this little girl that he had just met and gave her a Kiss on the cheek.

He finished by saying 'Your daddy told me to tell you that he loves you more than anything and he is coming home very soon.'

The mum at this point was crying almost uncontrollably and as the young soldier stood to his feet he saluted Courtney and her mum.

I was standing no more than 6 feet away as this entire event unfolded.

As the soldiers began to leave, heading towards their gate, people resumed their applause.

As I stood there applauding and looked around, there were very few dry eyes, including my own.

That young soldier in one last act of moment turned around and blew a kiss to Courtney with a tear rolling down his cheek.

We need to remember everyday all of our soldiers and their families and thank God for them and their sacrifices.

At the end of the day, it's good to be an Australian.

RED FRIDAYS

Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday.

The reason?

Australian's who support our troops used to be called the 'silent majority'.

We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for Country and home in record breaking numbers.

We are not organized, boisterous or over-bearing.

We get no liberal media coverage on TV, to reflect our message or our opinions.

Many Australian's, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of Australia supports our troops.

Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message that every Australian who supports our men and women afar will wear something red.

By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make Australia on every Friday a sea of red much like a homecoming football team

If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, co-workers, friends, and family, It will not be long before Australia is covered in RED and it will let our troops know the once 'silent' majority is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the media lets on.

The first thing a soldier says when asked 'What can we do to make things better for you?' is...'We need your support and your prayers'.

Let's get the word out and lead with class and dignity, by example; and wear something red every Friday.

Christmas Decorations

Well, I had hoped to put up the tree today... but that wasn't to be. I did do some basic decorating and as I was about to go to bed caught a view of the Candleholder with it's shadow and thought I'd try and get a pic. While I was at it, took a couple more too!

With some luck will get the tree up during the week!

GPP Crusade #15 - Where in the World?

For this crusade Michelle has asked us to make an entry on our blogs and to tell everyone where we presently live and those places that we may have grown up in.

I am so very grateful for the internet, I have made some wonderful life long friends and have been so lucky to have been fortunate enough to meet so many of you in person!

As my Dad worked for the Electricity Commission, we moved quite a lot... so I will start from the beginning...

Born in Sydney and moved into an apartment in Dolphin Street Coogee (hmmm marine mammals from the beginning! lol)

Lived in various cities in Sydney then moved to Cooma in the Snowy Mountains.

Next we went on to Muswellbrook, then Lithgow (all in New South Wales).

At 17 I moved back to Sydney and then met my ex. Lived in various places around Sydney, Carlton, Kogarah, Maroubra, Randwick, Kensington and then spent 16 years in a house 3km from the heart of the city of Sydney. Married at 23, no children (not by choice) but many wonderful 4 legged companions over the years.

My Dad went on to work for the Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation and moved to Thailand, Malaysia and then China. I spent many a holiday with them in Thailand, and absolutely loved visiting!

Was involved for many years in Whale Rescue and Research and have attended many live strandings, the most memorable being a Humpback whale who came ashore on Peregian Beach Queensland in the early 90's. He was very lucky as he was returned to the sea! Have spent many a day and night on beaches with stranded whales and dolphins and also babysitting seals that have hauled out too!

My Dad passed away in 1992 aged 55, and at that point I decided that life was way too short andthat I wanted to see the world!

Went to Scotland and took part in a Cetacean Survey which departed from Mallaig. The US was never a place that I really wanted to visit, but shortly before my trip to the UK, I found out I didn't have a ticket and the only way to get to Scotland was via the US. So, I stopped in Boston for a few days (whale watching of course) and on the way back went to Seattle, then Friday Harbor! I was hooked!

Next trip was to British Columbia to see the Orcas.... (1993) and as I started dabbling in rubber stamps in '92 my next trip took in a number of conventions. Not too sure how many trips I have had to the US, but I have been privileged to meet up with so many of my online friends and now have to fit in seeing everyone when I do arrive!

Moved to the south coast of New South Wales (2 hour drive from Sydney) in early 2006 as I have friends here who are more like family and it was the best decision I have ever made. Divorce came through in late 2006 and earlier this year I bought my own house on just under 1/4 acre. Although I am only 5 mins to town, there is bush out the back and being on such a large block it is as if I am out in the middle of nowhere! I live in my wonderful little house with my two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Baillie and Harley!

I can get to Seven Mile Beach in less than 15 mins and it takes 30 mins to get to Huskison on Jervis Bay. Here's a link to the south coast if you would like an even better look at the area in which I now live.

Summer Storms

Whilst those of you in the Northern Hemisphere get ready for winter, here downunder Summer started on December 1, and needless to say, so have the thunderstorms.

My dear friend Phyllis (with whom I share a birthday) was in Sydney yesterday and managed to snap off these shots on her new Nokia phone! You may be able to see the green in the sky.... different parts of the state had a hail storm, here in my suburb I was told they were the size of golf balls!

Luckily, the weather was fine on Sunday so I was able to mow the lawn, with all this rain it is growing like crazy and it is so great to see grass that is green!

This one looks like the Harbour Bridge is on fire don't you think?

A friend suggested I paint one of my boys, thanks Cathy! Turned out better than what I had anticipated! Have done a bit more work on this one..... and already have ideas about another! This canvas is approx 9 x 12" (22.5 x 30cm) and is 1 3/8" (3.5cm) deep.

Fairy Princess... inspired by Suzi Blu

Well, after watching many of Suzi Blu's vlogs, I decided to get out some paints and do a canvas as a present for a friend's little one.

Didn't turn out how I'd hoped, but at least it is something. I much prefer my sketches... just cannot seem to get the acrylic painting .... might just have to try watercolours! But as I said... it is something... I just had to make do with the small number of acrylics that I could lay my hands on.... one day soon my studio will be up and running... (I hope!) lol

Saturday Posting

Here's a picture taken during the week on the way home from work. Although it was a stormy afternoon, just wanted to share the views I have to endure! lol

Although we are in a drought, where I live on the South Coast we still do manage to get our fair share of coastal showers!

Well, today is Federal Election Day. Here in Australia it is mandatory that everyone over the age of 18 vote. Failure to vote = a fine!

After taking the boys out to visit the vet (they actually love visiting Steve... and you have a hard time getting them out of the surgery!) I stopped in at the local school and had to line up for 20 mins!

Anyway, a friend and I are having a garage sale tomorrow so I am trying to sort through boxes (which haven't been unpacked for 18months since I left Sydney). I really do need to declutter..

Imaginary Friends - Who or What is your muse?

On Michelle's GPP Streat Team we are asked if we have a Muse, if there is someone who inspires us and our art, or what is a Muse? The definition says it's a guiding genius who motivates you. We are also asked if we have imaginary friends who visit us in our studio space?

Whilst I don't have any imaginary friends, there are a number of things that do motivate me. I too love my music, and have it playing constantly. Nature in all its forms, I have a particular passion for Cetaceans and Wolves. There really aren't any words to describe the feeling of looking into the eyes of a wild whale or a dolphin...

Also I have made a couple of visits to Wolf Mountain Sanctuary in Southern California over the years and had the privilege to meet Durango, a Canadian Tundra Wolf.

He is a healing and spiritual wolf and believe it or not, the image of an angel did appear on his forehead when he was sitting with me. These guys are amazing.... so much bigger in the flesh but also so gentle .... it is an amazing feeling being with them.

I think a lot of you will agree with my saying that Michelle would have to be a Muse for a lot of us. She is such a talented, sharing, caring and amazing person.... Michelle, you rock!

The last couple of years have been an adjustment, and I really haven't been able to get back into my creative space.... once I finish unpacking and decluttering I hope that will change.

In the meantime, I have at least been doing some work with glass, some of which you will find further down on this page.

Dichroic Glass Pendants

I have managed to find some time in the last couple of weeks to make some more dichroic pendants and have placed them on in my store at Etsy.

I've also located some wonderful mini bottles that I have bought in the past and have placed them in the store as well. They are really cute and I have placed cork stoppers in them already.

Perfect for assemblage or jewellery making. You can turn these into a great pendant by either wire wrapping the neck or inserting a hook into the cork. I have also enclosed some in clay. You can even store beads or other little goodies in these.

They measure 35mm tall and 16mm wide (approx).

Look what I found in the supermarket this afternoon! These pumpkins were reduced to 10c and came in a "Carve a Pumpkin" bag. When I arrived home yesterday there was a note in the letterbox enclosing an orange ribbon and asking people to display it if they didn't want children coming in for "trick or treat".

Dichroic Glass Pendants

I have actually managed to do something art wise at long last.... I have managed to locate all my glass and have been playing around creating some cabachons to turn into pendants, and I also made a bird nest copper pendant with freshwater pearls for a friend who breeds poultry - but I liked it so much I kept it and will have to make her another! lol

Daylight Savings

Hope everyone remembered to put their clocks forward this morning!

Here are a few pics of some of my regular visitors, a couple of Rainbow Lorikeets. The weather wasn't too kind, hence the poor quality of the pictures.

This is one of the wonderful birdnest ferns that is growing in my back yard. They are amazing plants - I'm lucky that I have such a fabulous established garden... I just now need to learn how to care for all the plants!

I took the following picture from the back door a couple of evenings ago.... pity about the reflections.... I must get out of bed early and try and go to the beach to get a sunrise over the ocean....

I have been working with glass and will upload some of my latest pieces once the camera battery has recharged!

I just had a pair of King Parrots in the bird feeder out front. They are beautiful birds.... however, I wasn't quick enough to get a picture. So here is a photo I took of Baillie instead!

Michelle reminded me of another crush that I had forgotten about as I cannot get them here. I discovered these when I was visiting the US.... boy are they good! Aren't they Michelle "wink"!

Must be something about the saltiness of the pretzels and the sweetness of the chocolate... but then again, chocolate is chocolate, right? And yes, have to admit that I am quite fond of the chocolate flavoured potato crisps too! lol

My latest obsession is handbags. I fell in love with a friend's Kathy Van Zeeland bag and thanks to Ebay have managed to secure some great ones!

Then there is my obsession with boots!

A girl just cannot have too many handbags, boots or shoes!
